Orientation 2010
2010 Law Orientation Camp
The 2010 Law Orientation Camp at Kiah Ridge was attended by around 70 new law students, from a broad range of combined, graduate, and non graduate courses, as well as seven very enthusiastic LSA members and a collection of kooky UWS law staff. On Saturday students attended seminars conducted by the indefatigable Michelle Brown, First Year Coordinator, covering time management, legal academic skills, and university life, among others. We have to send our thanks to the legal eagles who attended the camp to speak to students about their personal experiences and careers, and the paths that got them there, as well as to offer invaluable career advice. The costumes that came out for our L themed dress up evening were so good that prizes for best dressed had to be divided between the Letter, and the Lyrebirds! Our new students were given the opportunity to sign up for a law buddy, a mentor and partner intended to help you survive your first year, and to ask questions of a panel made up of the aforementioned enthusiastic LSA members, along with Sam Azzopardi, another keen UWS law student who kindly came along to help out.
On Sunday the enigmatic Robert Hayes, UWS Law Lecturer spoke to students about his experience of law school and his career as an academic, followed by Michelle Brown who discussed the differences between her different experiences in private practice at one of Sydney's top firms, and the globe trotting, academic lifestyle she now leads. Finally the newly inducted students were given the opportunity to prove their mettle by appearing in teams for either the prosecution or the defence in sentencing matters, presided over by rogue, would be magistrates McGrath and Brown.
If you are interested in signing up for a Law Buddy, please contact Michelle Sanson on m.sanson@uws.edu.au.
Stellar Year
2009 proved to be a stellar year in the LSA social calendar, with a sell out crowd of 200 attending the Law Ball at the prestigious Harbours Edge in October. Renowned Sydney barrister Winston Terracini SC honoured us by attending as our guest speaker.
In 2010 the LSA hopes to be able to expand the Law Ball, and among new plans for the social calendar is a mid year party. Details of social events will be posted here as they become available.
